Our House In…

Tuesday, November 18, 2015:  In accordance with the rules of proper aimless adventure, we began our journey to Mexico by driving northeast.  After driving for about 3 hours in the rain, encountering a bull elk along the way, we arrived at  Boulder Lodge, about 20 miles east of Hayward, Wisconsin, in the heart of the Chequamegon National Forest.

Terry and Michelle are amazing hosts – we’d say that even if they weren’t family.  Their resort on Ghost Lake gets better every time we visit.  You’ll find the north woods beauty you’d expect along with some of the best muskie fishing and conversation around.

The property is the site of a turn-of-the-twentieth-century logging camp, with plenty of evidence of the past, including the main lodge building itself.  The old wooden lodge room has amazing acoustics, and if you visit on a weekend, you’ll likely find talented musicians playing.  Live music is a definite priority at Boulder Lodge.

Wednesday, November 19, 2015, 1 pm:  No visit to Wisconsin would be complete without stopping in to see our friends Harry and Linda at Lucky’s Bar & Grill in Clear Lake.  You can’t go wrong with great burgers and homemade pizza.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After lunch, we took another rainy, windy drive south to Decorah, Iowa for the night.  Decorah is the home of Toppling Goliath, well known to the beer geeks among us.  We were excited to check out their tap room and sample beers that aren’t available in Minnesota.  While the beers were good, we found the tap room surprisingly boring – maybe we have gotten spoiled by the craft beer revolution and associated fun tap rooms in the Twin Cities of late.
