Our House In…

Sunday, November 22, 2015:  We arrived at the site of our new legal residence, the Livingston, Texas headquarters of the Escapees RV Club. This was our first experience in a traditional RV campground.

Upon pulling into our site and getting ready to set up full hookups for the first time, I (Michael) noticed a problem.  We had specified with the office while checking in that we needed a 30 Amp service.  The shared pole did have a 30 and a 50 Amp outlet, but the RV in the neighboring site was already plugged into the 30 Amp, and we don’t have an adapter to plug into 50.

So what do we do?  Should we go buy a 50 to 30 Amp adapter?  Might be useful in the future.  Should we go to the office, tell them we’ve got a problem, and see what they want to do?

Instead, I decided it’s time to go talk to the neighbors.  After all, RV people are a community, always ready to chat and be friendly, and eager to help each other out.  Right?  Surely this RV won’t be occupied by a cranky old couple with poor hearing, so that you have to shout over their constantly yapping little dog to be heard.  Right?  Not a wacked out prepper going on about surviving the latter days in his (probably well armed) RV?  We’ve got to start meeting fellow campers sooner or later.  And maybe they’ll be able to move their plug for us.  So, with a little irrational trepidation I went next door to see who the neighbors were:

Andrew and Christine are based in Austin, Texas, where they pursue a variety of interesting pursuits, including film production, composition, photography…too many creative outlets to list.  Add consulting and RV mechanic as well.  It turns out that we actually frequented the same Montrose bar as Christine in the early 90s.  Small world.

Monday morning we got up, took care of some business with the Escapees Mail Service, and went into town to get our RV inspected and get our new Texas drivers licenses.  The clerk at the Driver’s License Office told us that most of their new TDL applicants from out of state are Escapees members, and they get several each day.  Livingston is home to a whole lot of people who don’t spend much time there.
